Introduction:

The Blue Ala Wai Canal Foundation is committed to the restoration, preservation, and resilience of the Ala Wai Canal in Waikiki, Hawaii. Our mission aligns with fostering a sustainable and thriving ecosystem while ensuring flood control solutions that safeguard our community. In light of this mission, we respectfully express our opposition to the proposed 6-foot wall project and advocate for a more efficient approach through the implementation of a dual outlet system.

Preserving Ecosystem Balance:

A 6-foot wall around the Ala Wai Canal, while intending to mitigate flooding, carries the risk of disrupting the delicate balance of our local ecosystem. Such an imposing structure could hinder natural water flow, impacting aquatic life and vegetation. In contrast, a dual outlet system enables us to manage water levels without compromising the ecological integrity of the canal and its surroundings.

Integrated Flood Management:

Our vision of flood resilience involves the implementation of a dual outlet system that addresses the multifaceted challenges posed by flooding. By incorporating natural floodplains and water retention areas, we can manage floodwaters efficiently while providing space for recreational use and educational opportunities. This approach complements our commitment to environmental stewardship, offering a comprehensive solution that benefits both the community and nature.

Adaptive Response to Climate Change:

Climate change introduces a dynamic range of challenges, including increased precipitation and rising sea levels. A rigid 6-foot wall might offer temporary relief, but it lacks adaptability to changing conditions. Our proposed dual outlet system adapts to varying flood scenarios, allowing for controlled water release and preventing the stagnation that a static wall might cause.

Preserving Scenic Beauty and Cultural Heritage:

Waikiki's allure lies not only in its beaches but also in its cultural and natural heritage. A towering flood wall could obscure iconic views and diminish the aesthetic appeal of our community. In contrast, a dual outlet system can be designed to coexist harmoniously with the landscape, preserving the scenic beauty that defines Waikiki.

Enhancing Community Engagement:

The success of any flood control initiative relies on community engagement and support. Our proposed dual outlet system encourages community involvement by providing accessible areas for recreation, education, and interaction with the environment. This fosters a sense of ownership and responsibility for the canal's well-being.

Conclusion:

In our commitment to a resilient Ala Wai Canal and a flood control solution that harmonizes with our mission, we respectfully challenge the viability of the 6-foot wall project. Our advocacy for a dual outlet system stems from a comprehensive approach that balances flood management, ecological health, cultural preservation, and community engagement. We invite stakeholders to join us in embracing a more versatile and sustainable solution that truly safeguards the future of our beloved Waikiki community.
